Intro to Beginner: 1.0–1.5Just starting out, learning the very basics. New to tennis with little to no experience. Learning to hold the racquet properly, make contact, and understand the rules. Struggles to rally or serve consistently. Matches (if played) have short points, many unforced errors, and frequent double faults. Still developing all strokes and court positioning.

Beginner Plus: 1.5–2.5Starting to build fundamentals, but still learning consistency. Has some experience and is starting to rally occasionally. Beginning to develop basic stroke mechanics (forehand, backhand, serve, volley). Struggles with control, consistency, and timing under pressure. Still loses most matches but may win some points with improved technique. Participates in beginner clinics, intro tournaments, or casual play.

Intermediate: 2.6–3.5Can rally and play structured points, but needs more consistency and strategy. Can rally with moderate consistency, especially on forehands. Starting to understand tactics and positioning. Serve and return are developing but may still be inconsistent. Matches are more competitive, with longer rallies and fewer unforced errors. May start to win matches against other intermediates but struggles against advanced players.

Advanced Intermediate: 3.6–4.5Solid and reliable game, beginning to use strategies and pressure opponents. Stronger shot mechanics and improved court movement. Can execute topspin, slice, volleys, and consistent serves. Understands match strategy and adjusts tactics mid-game. Competitive in matches and able to win points with placement or consistency. Matches include longer rallies, fewer errors, and well-constructed points.

Expert: 4.5+High-level player with refined skills and consistent match play. Technically sound strokes and reliable under pressure. Matches feature aggressive play, strategy shifts, and minimal unforced errors. Uses pace, angles, and variety effectively. Competes at high-level amateur tournaments or strong UTR-rated events. Can challenge and win against most players at the club or league level.
